Jurassic Playground

In January 2020, our TDA classes explored the theme “Jurassic Playground.”

Throughout the month, students researched different creatures of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods, then voted on which ones to built and paint into a playful installation along the UHC playground fence. TDA students meet 2 days each week, and in this short time, they planned, built, and installed their pieces. The project involved:

  • Learning how to cut and sand plywood with power tools

  • Designing, painting, and sealing each panel

  • Figuring out the scientifically correct chronological order of the dinosaurs so each creature could be installed in oldest-to-most-recent order

Each of the 8 species in the series is based on actual paleontologist fossil findings and is painted on its own sheet of plywood. Pieces range from 2 feet tall to 6 feet long or more. The install is free and open to public viewing. For a close up view of the inner (playground) side of the paintings, please visit after 6 pm or on a weekend (the playgrounds are reserved for tenant students weekdays before 6 pm). In the meantime, check out each of the dinosaurs in our virtual installation below.

Three Dragons Academy has been a resident organization at UHC since 2012 and twice has been voted a Top 5 Best Art Classes and Camps in Seattle program by Parentmap magazine. Check out our upcoming summer camps!
